2015 Major International Cooperation Activities

1) The 7th Seoul International New Pharmaceuticals Forum

At the Grand Hyatt Seoul on June 18, KRICT and Financial News held the 7th Seoul International New Pharmaceuticals Forum under the theme of Research on New Diseases Caused by Bacteria and Viruses and the Development of Vaccines.
Organized by Financial News and KRICT and sponsored by the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning, Ministry of Health & Welfare and the Ministry of Food & Drug Safety, the Seoul International New Pharmaceuticals Forum is celebrating its seventh anniversary. The forum serves to establish measures against new viruses and to examine global trends in new disease research and vaccine development. In addition to the forum, KRICT introduced 12 new technologies related to pharmaceuticals and provided one-to-one consulting at the KRICT New Drug R&D Industry-Research Technology Exchange Meeting.

2)	MOU signing for Korea-Czech Republic STI cooperation

On December 2 at the Hilton Prague, KRICT signed an international MOU with the University of Defence, University of Hradec Králové and University Hospital Hradec Králové on the development of antidotes against chemical agents. The four institutes plan to overcome the limits of current antidotes, and develop drugs to combat sarin, soman and tabun chemical agents.
Under the MOU, KRICT will cooperate with the University of Hradec Králové and University Hospital Hradec Králové in various aspects. The institutes will exchange research personnel and resources for joint research, and expand research areas to the development of gas mask filters, gas mask materials and chemical agent detection.
The MOU signing ceremony was attended by Minister Yanghee Choi of the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning; President Kew-Ho Lee of KRICT; Dr. Young Sik Jung of KRICT; Robert Plaga, deputy minister of education, youth and sport in Czech Republic; Pavel Bostik, vice dean at the University of Defence; and Kamil Kuca, vice president of the University of Hradec Králové.

3)	Alliance agreement between KRICT and Kellogg, Brown and Root (KBR) for the commercialization of new petrochemical processes

On December 3, KRICT signed an alliance agreement with the renowned engineering company Kellogg, Brown and Root (KBR) for commercialization research on petrochemical catalytic processes.
The target technology is catalytic naphtha cracking technology, developed by Dr. Yong Ki Park of KRICT since 2002. The naphtha cracking process uses naphtha derived from oil refinement in fibers, packaging, interiors and exteriors of vehicles and industrial components. The existing process decomposes naphtha at high temperatures exceeding 850℃. KRICT proposed a new process that allows decomposition of naphtha to occur at 700℃, which is 150℃ lower than the currently recommended temperature. This lowers energy consumption and reduces carbon dioxide emissions.
Through the joint research, KRICT will develop more outstanding catalysts and contribute to the low-cost, energy-saving production of olefin. Based on catalysts developed by KRICT, KBR will develop commercialization process technology for factories and will export petrochemical processes around the world. In the next three years, KRICT will receive not only 1 million USD as research funds, but also a portion of sales from KBR as royalty.
