Center for Convergent Research of Emerging Virus Infection (CEVI)
Development of convergent solutions to cope with infection by new viruses

The Department is developing technology to efficiently cope with infection by new viruses through the diagnosis, prevention, treatment and spread prevention of high-risk, unspecific, new, and variant viruses that are highly probable to be introduced to Korea, including MERS and Zika viruses.

Major research fields

Research goals

Development of technology for supersensitive diagnosis, vaccines, therapeutics, and spread prevention against unspecific, new, and variant viruses that are highly probable to be introduced to Korea

  • Development of platform technology for new virus infection screening and diagnosis
  • Discovering vaccine candidates and developing efficacy evaluation system
  • Development of candidates of COVID-19 therapeutics that may be commercialized
  • Development of Korea prediction model and smart construction materials for preventing virus infection and spread

Key research accomplishments

Diagnostic technology

  • Transfer of rapid human diagnosis technology with MERS coronavirus
  • Transfer of molecular diagnosis technology based on SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) gene amplification
  • Realization of FET-based supersensitive Zika virus detection sensor
  • Development of technology for precise and early detection of infection sources based on nano-Raman technology
  • Development of riboregulator for detecting RNA of Zika virus and MERS coronavirus based on synthetic biology

Prevention technology

  • Transfer of COVID-19 vaccine candidate technology based on hyper-immunogenicity vaccine candidates development platform
  • Establishment of vaccine efficacy evaluation system through the development of transformed mouse

Development of therapeutics

Transfer of technology about high-efficacy, low-molecular weight COVID-19 therapeutic candidates

Technology for spread prevention

  • Development of methods for preliminary prediction of candidates of pandemic
  • Photocatalyst-based evaluation of antiviral performance of cement-based construction materials, air conditioning filters, and coating agents
