letter-spacing: -0.02em; word-break: keep-all; overflow-wrap: break-word; color: rgb(102, 102, 102); text-align: center;" text-align:="" word-break:="">  감염병 대응의 처음과 끝 많은 학자들은 인류의 역사를 ‘감염병과의 전쟁’으로 묘사합니다. 흑사병, 천연두, 결핵, 간염, 홍역, 에이즈, 에볼라, 고병원성 조류인플루엔자(AI), 메르스, 지카 그리고 국내에서만 연간 4천여 명 가까운 사망자를 내고 있는 슈퍼박테리아까지 인류는 끊임없는 감염병의 위협 속에 살아왔습니다. 코로나19로 지구촌 전체가 골머리를 앓고 있는 지금 이 시간에도 미국과 터키, 인도 등지에서는 웨스트나일, 니파 바이러스로 인한 사망자가 발생하며 또 다른 바이러스 확산에 대한 우려도 커지고 있는 상황이지요. 오랜 기간 전세계적인 감염병 출현과 진화 양상을 추적해온 미국의 과학전문기자 소니아 샤는 <팬데믹: 바이러스의 위협>이란 책에서 지난 50년 간 모두 300종 이상의 감염병이 예전에 한 번도 등장한 적 없는 장소와 집단에서 새롭게 출현하거나 재출현했다고 밝히고 있는데요. 이렇게 하나를 막으면 또 다른 곳에서 풍선처럼 튀어나오며 쉴 새 없이 인류를 공격하고 있는 감염병에 대응하기 위해서는 꾸준한 연구와 선제적인 대응 시스템 개발이 필요합니다. 특히 화학연이 국내 정부출연연구기관 중 최초로 코로나19 백신 후보물질 개발에 성공해 주목을 받았는데요, 이 백신 후보물질은 백신 효능 중 하나인 중화항체 생성률이 다른 백신 후보물질들보다 최대 5배 높고 안전성도 뛰어나며 변이 바이러스에도 효과가 있는 것으로 나타났습니다.   벨기에로 떠난 초기 연구진 화학연의 연구 성과는 백신뿐만 아니라 진단과 치료제 분야에서도 계속해서 줄을 이었습니다. 코로나19 사태 초기 질병관리청으로부터 넘겨받은 바이러스 분리주를 이용해 실시간 유전자 증폭 기반의 분자진단키트 기술을 개발했습니다. 또 화학연 내 한국화합물은행이 보유한 약 20만 개의 화합물 라이브러리를 스크리닝한 끝에 기존 치료제인 렘데시비르보다 약효가 더 뛰어나고 메르스, 사스에도 효과가 있는 치료제 후보물질을 도출한 것입니다. 이처럼 화학연이 진단·예방·치료 전 분야에 걸쳐 신속하고 의미 있는 성과들을 선보일 수 있었던 데는 깊은 역사가 있습니다. 감염병은 언제, 어디서, 어떻게 발생하고 유행할지 쉽게 예측하기가 어렵습니다. 따라서 지속적이고 심도 깊은 연구개발이 선행되어야만 갑작스런 출현에도 빠르게 대응할 수 있는데요. 화학연은 이미 1980년대부터 감염병 문제에 주목하며 한 발 앞서 대응역량과 인프라를 구축하기 시작했습니다. 감염병은 연구 자체도 어렵지만 시설도 매우 중요합니다. 감염병 실험시설은 특히 연구자 본인뿐만 아니라 주변 환경도 세심하게 고려해야 하는 만큼 구축 과정과 절차 모두 조심스럽고 신중할 수밖에 없는데요. 초기에는 약초 같은 천연재료에서 항바이러스 물질을 분리해 입술 주위 물집이 잡히는 허피스 바이러스의 치료제 정도를 개발하던 단순한 수준이었는데도 실험실 주변으로 발길이 뚝 끊길 만큼 어려움이 많았습니다. 1995년 본격적인 에이즈 치료제 개발을 위해 병원성 세균과 바이러스를 연구할 수 있는 BSL(Biosafety level) 실험실을 설치할 때는 같은 건물 사용자들 사이에 찬반투표까지 진행됐지요.   감염병 연구 역량의 강화 감염병 연구의 어려움은 비단 우리나라만의 현상이 아닙니다. 자본과 시설이 있다 해도 누구나 연구를 할 수 있는 게 아니지요. 취급이 어려운 감염병 연구는 국제사회의 허락이 필요합니다. 이제는 사라진 천연두 바이러스 연구는 오직 미국과 러시아에서만 가능합니다. 짧은 시간에 세계의 축산업 기반을 통째로 흔들 수 있는 구제역은 미국 정부 소속의 외딴 섬에서 외부와 완벽히 격리된 채 연구가 진행되고 있습니다. 외부 노출의 위험 때문에 일부 국가 외에는 바이러스 분양 자체가 안 되는 경우도 많습니다. 하지만 갖은 난관 속에서도 20여 종의 감염병으로 차근차근 연구범위를 넓혀간 화학연의 연구 역량은 2006년 세계적인 글로벌 제약사 길리아드와 에이즈 치료제 후보물질을 공동개발하는 수준까지 빠르게 성장합니다. 이어 2014년에는 정부출연연구기관 중 최초로 BSL3 연구시설 인증을 받으며 저위험성 세균부터 고위험성 바이러스까지 100여 종 이상의 감염병들로 연구개발의 대상을 확대할 수 있게 되었지요. letter-spacing: -0.02em;">흙을 빚어 간단하게 만들 수 있었던 세라믹 토기는 점차 굽는 온도를 높이고 유약을 입힌 도자기로 발전하면서 인류의 생활문화를 비약적으로 발전시키는 부싯돌이 됐습니다. 약 5천 년 전 메소포타미아 지방에서는 모래에서 반짝거리는 규사 알갱이들만 골라서 투명하고 맑은 유리그릇을 만들기 시작합니다. 구운 석회석 가루를 물과 반죽하면 시멘트가 된다는 사실도 알게 됐습니다. 거대한 돌을 층층이 정밀하게 쌓아올린 피라미드가 수천 년 동안 보존될 수 있는데도 인류 최초로 건축물에 사용한 시멘트가 중요한 역할을 하고 있습니다. 거대한 돌의 표면과 사이를 채운 세라믹이 풍화작용과 부식의 피해를 줄인 것이지요. 원소의 존재를 몰랐던 옛 사람들은 모래, 점토, 고령토, 장석, 규석 같은 천연원료들을 구워서 도자기, 타일, 유리 같은 세라믹을 만들었습니다. 이런 전통세라믹은 금속보다 단단하고 부식에도 강해 자연환경에서 잘 견디지만 충격을 받으면 잘 깨진다는 약점이 있습니다. 또 금속이나 고분자 등의 재료는 녹여서 재활용할 수 있지만 세라믹 제품은 한 번 만들고 나면 모양이나 성질을 바꾸기도 어렵습니다. 금속이 큰 충격을 받으면 깨지기보다 구부러지는 이유는 자유전자들 때문입니다. 금속은 안정한 원자구조가 되기 위해 자기의 전자들을 하나씩 내놓는데 이 전자들은 구속받지 않고 자유롭게 움직일 수가 있습니다. 반면 홑원소물질인 금속과 달리 세라믹은 금속과 비금속 원소의 조합이기 때문에 매우 구조가 복잡합니다. 이런 매우 강한 결합은 세라믹이 금속보다 높은 강도와 녹는점을 갖게 합니다. 하지만 자유전자가 없어 충격을 받으면 구부러지는 게 아니라 쉽게 깨져버리게 됩니다.<span 400="" class="se-fs- se-ff- se-weight-unset se-style-unset " normal="" style="box-sizing: border-box; KRICT NEWS                 고위험 감염병 자원은행 현판식     화학연은 5월 26일(수) E5 바이러스연구동에서 고위험 감염병 자원은행 현판식을 개최했다. 고위험 감염병 자원은행은 국내외 고위험 감염병 자원 관련 네트워크를 구축하여 고위험 감염병 샘플의 확보, 자원화, 보존 및 관리, 분양 업무를 수행하는 기관이다. 고위험 감염병의 병원체는 국가의 이익과도 연결되는 자원으로서 가공 여부에 따라 백신과 치료제 개발 시 큰 가치를 갖게 된다. 고위험 감염병 자원은행의 핵심역할은 국내외에서 수집된 병원체를 표준화해 보관하는 것이며 이를 다양화, 특성화해 국내에서 필요로 하는 연구기관, 기업, 대학 등에 병원체를 분양하는 역할도 맡고 있다.             　       　 KRICT NEWS                 빅데이터 화학기술 연구 위한 차세대 소프트화학 건물 준공식     빅데이터와 인공지능을 활용한 화학기술 연구와 관련 전문인력 양성 등을 위해 설립한 차세대 소프트화학 솔루션 기반구축사업 건물 준공식이 6월 21일 개최됐다. 신축 건물은 연면적 6,109㎡, 지하 1층 지상 3층 규모다. 이 건물에는 화학연 화학데이터기반연구센터, 화학소재솔루션센터, 화학안전연구센터, 전산운영실 등이 입주한다. 새로 준공된 차세대 소프트 화학건물은 데이터 중심의 연구를 위한 기술 인프라를 중앙집중할 수 있도록 전산(서버)장비실이 약 400㎡로 구축되었다. 서버장비의 높은 하중을 고려해 설계됐으며, 향후 서버장비 확장도 가능하도록 구축되었다.         　 KRICT NEWS                   화학소재 디지털 플랫폼 공동 구축 업무협약     화학연과 SK종합화학의 화학소재 디지털 플랫폼 공동 구축 업무협약식이 7월 2일 화학연 대회의실에서 개최됐다. 이날 MOU 체결식은 화학소재 디지털 플랫폼의 필요성 및 관련 업계와의 상생협력을 위한 생태계를 조성하고자 마련됐다. 이 자리에는 한국화학연구원 최원춘 부원장, SK종합화학 서원규 전략본부장 등 행사 관계자가 함께했다. 화학연과 SK종합화학이 체결한 이번 MOU는 AI/DT 기반의 화학소재 솔루션 플랫폼을 공동 구축해 중소 화학소재 산업계의 경쟁력을 제고함과 동시에 사회적가치 확대를 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 양 괴관은 보유역량을 바탕으로 협업해 국내 중소 화학소재 업체들의 연구개발을 지원할 예정이다.           　 KRICT NEWS                 '플라스틱, 피할 수 없으면 되돌려라' 온라인 강연     화학연은 6월 4일 국립중앙과학관과 함께 과학관 과학교육스튜디오에서 ‘플라스틱, 피할 수 없으면 되돌려라’를 주제로 온라인 강의를 개최했다. 청소년 진로체험교육의 일환인 이번 강의에는 서울 및 대전·충청권 4개 중·고등학교 110여명이 참여했다. 이번 진로특강 주제는 ‘플라스틱’으로, 화학공정연구본부 탄소자원화연구단 황동원 단장이 강의했다. 강의에서는 인류 문명과 생활 속 플라스틱의 역할, 플라스틱 쓰레기 문제를 해결하기 위해 화학연에서 개발하고 있는 플라스틱 해중합 기술 등에 대해 소개했다.      

KRICT 온새미로 * 온새미로는 ‘있는 그대로, 자연 그대로’라는 뜻의 순우리말입니다.                 세계 최고 강도 자가치유 신소재 개발       정밀·바이오화학연구본부   화학연·부경대 공동연구팀은 실온에서 절단되어도 스스로 회복하는 자가치유(self-healing) 기능을 가지면서 신발 밑창만큼 질긴 소재를 개발했다. 이 소재는 지금까지 개발된 자가치유 소재 중 기계적 강도가 가장 높다.   　 자가치유 (self-healing) 소재는 상처를 스스로 치유하는 실제 피부처럼, 외부 환경에 의해 손상을 입은 고분자가 스스로 결함을 감지하여 자신의 구조를 복구함은 물론 원래의 기능을 회복할 수 있는 지능형 재료이다. 　 울버린, 터미네이터와 같은 SF 영화에서 주인공은 신체가 찢어지거나 절단되어도 상처를 스스로 회복하는 자가치유 초능력을 갖는다. 의류, 신발, 타이어, 자동차, 롤러블·폴더블 디스플레이 코팅 등의 제품이 자가치유 된다면 수명이 길어지고 항상 새것과 같은 상태를 유지할 수 있다. 이에 전 세계적으로 자가치유 신소재를 개발하는 연구가 활발히 진행 중이다. 　 자가치유 소재는 지금까지 여러 기계적 강도를 측정하는 방법 중 한 가지로 소재를 당겨 끊어질 때까지 들어가는 힘인 인장강도가 약했다. 자가치유가 잘 되려면 분자 간 결합이 느슨하고 분자들이 자유롭게 이동해야 하기 때문이다. 즉, 단단한 고체가 아닌 젤리처럼 부드러워야 회복이 잘 된다. 기존 자가치유 소재는 이처럼 말랑말랑하고 무르다. 하지만 자가치유 소재가 상품화되기 위해서는 외부 마찰이나 압력을 견딜 수 있어야 해 이 부분을 해결해야 한다. 　 화학연 오동엽, 박제영, 황성연 연구팀은 단단하고 질기면서도 자가치유 능력이 좋은, 두 가지 모순된 속성을 동시에 갖는 새로운 소재를 개발했다. 기존 상업화 소재인 열가소성 폴리우레탄 기본 골격에, 외부 충격을 받으면 수소결합 형성해 단단해지고 충격이 없을 때에는 수소결합을 하지 않아 말랑해지는 특수한 카보네이트 (Carbonate) 화합물을 도입하였다. 이에 따라 외부 마찰이나 충격을 받으면 순식간에 물질의 분자 결합이 견고해지면서 단단한 결정(크리스탈)으로 변해 충격으로부터 스스로 보호하고, 충격 후에는 분자 이동이 자유로운 부드러운 상태로 돌아가 손상을 스스로 회복하는 원리다. 이렇게 외부 충격 여부에 따라 화학물질이 변하는 현상을 소재에 적용한 예는 지금까지 보고되지 않았다.     ㄱㅇㄹ             ㄱ         ㄱ     　 개발된 소재는 인장강도가 43 MPa 이상으로 측정됐다. 신발 밑창으로 쓰이는 폴리우레탄 소재와 유사한 수준으로, 연구팀이 2018년 개발한 소재보다 강도가 6배나 높다. 지금까지 인장강도 최고기록은 일본 동경대학교나 RIKEN 연구소가 달성한 20-30 MPa 정도다. 또한 신규 소재는 외부 압력의 세기에 따라 물질이 단단해지는 정도가 달라진다. 외부 압력의 정도에 따라 고체와 젤리 상태를 오가면서 충격의 흡수를 조절하고 스스로 손상도 회복하는 것이다. 　 부경대 고분자공학과 엄영호 교수 공동연구팀은 화학연에서 개발한 자가치유 소재의 물리적 특성을 분석했다. 실험 결과 본 소재는 점도가 높지 않아 가공이 쉬워 다양한 모양의 제품으로 성형하는데 유리한 것으로 나타났다. 　 오동엽 박사는 “차세대 첨단기기인 롤러블·폴더블 스마트폰은 여러 번 펼치고 접는 과정에서 화면이나 본체가 점차 하얗게 변하면서 약해진다. 이러한 현상을 소재 피로 손상이라고 하는데 롤러블·폴더블 디스플레이 상용화 후에도 소비자들 만족도가 떨어지는 부분이다. 개발된 소재를 적용할 시 롤러블·폴더블 디스플레이를 접었다 폈다 하면서 발생하는 손상을 끊임없이 회복하여 이런 문제를 극복할 것으로 기대된다.”고 밝혔다. 　 이번 연구결과는 과학분야 분야 최고 권위지 중 하나인 ‘네이쳐 커뮤니케이션즈(Nature Communications)’ 1월호에 게재됐으며, 논문제목은 ‘Mechano-responsive hydrogen-bonding array of thermoplastic polyurethane elastomer captures both strength and self-healing’이다. (Impact factor: 12.121) 이번 성과는 한국화학연구원의 수월성 연구그룹 육성 사업 및 연구재단의 신진연구 지원을 받아 수행됐다.    

KRICT 온새미로 * 온새미로는 ‘있는 그대로, 자연 그대로’라는 뜻의 순우리말입니다.                   화학연-생명연, 동아에스티와 프로탁 기술을 적용한 항암제 기술이전 계약 체결         의약바이오연구본부   화학연-생명연, 동아에스티 간 기술이전 협약식   화학연은 은 한국생명공학연구원(원장 김장성) 및 동아에스티(대표이사 엄대식)와 6월 25일 오전 10시 30분 화학연 대회의실에서 단백질 분해 신약개발 플랫폼인 프로탁(Proteolysis-targeting chimera, PROTAC) 기술을 적용한 항암제 기술이전 계약을 체결했다. 계약식에는 화학연 이미혜 원장과 생명연 김장성 원장, 동아에스티 엄대식 대표 이사 및 관계자들이 참석했다.   　 화학연 황종연 박사 연구팀과 생명연의 김정훈 박사 연구팀은 표적 단백질 분해 기술로 암 유발 단백질을 분해 및 제거하여 난치암을 치료할 수 있는 프로탁 약물을 개발하였고, 동아에스티는 이번 계약에 따라 단백질 분해제를 확보하여 차세대 신약개발 플랫폼 기술을 구축하고 표적항암제 개발을 진행할 계획이다.   　 기존 표적 치료제와 프로탁 기술을 활용한 단백질 분해제의 치료기전 비교. 기존 표적치료제들은 질병유발 단백질의 특정 부위에 결합해야만 약효를 나타낼 수 있었지만 프로탁기술을 활용하여 결합부위에 상관없이 다양한 표적에 적용이 가능하다.                       프로탁은 질병유발 단백질에 유비퀴틴(Ubiquitin)을 결합시키고 프로테아좀(Proteasome)에 의해 강제로 분해시켜 질병의 원인을 원천적으로 제거 하는 약물이다. 체내의 모든 세포에는 단백질을 분해시키는 유비퀴틴 프로테아좀 시스템(Ubiquitin proteasome system, UPS)이라는 정화작용이 존재하는데, 이 과정에서 유비퀴틴은 분해되어야 하는 단백질을 알려주는 표식 역할을 하며, 프로테아좀은 유비퀴틴 표식을 인지하고 해당 단백질을 파괴하는 분쇄기 역할을 한다. 　 기존 표적치료제들은 질병을 유발하는 표적 단백질의 특정 부위에 결합해야만 약효를 나타낼 수 있었다. 이와 달리 프로탁 기술이 적용된 약물은 결합부위에 상관없이 표적 단백질에 유비퀴틴을 결합시키고 프로테아좀으로 분해시키는 방식을 활용하여 기존 치료제 약물로 공략하기 어려웠던 다양한 표적에 적용이 가능하다. 　 또한 결합 부위의 돌연변이에 기인하는 약물 내성의 한계도 극복할 수 있으며, 표적 단백질 분해 후 재사용 될 수 있어 적은 투여 용량으로도 높은 치료 효과를 내고 부작용을 낮출 수 있는 장점도 갖췄다. 화학연 이미혜 원장은 “동아에스티에서 한국화학연구원과 한국생명공학연구원이 공동 개발한 프로탁 기술 도입을 통해 신약 개발 플랫폼 기술을 구축하고, 이를 기반으로 기존 표적항암제의 한계를 극복한 신약개발에 성공하시길 기대한다.”고 말했다. 한편, 화학연과 생명연은 과학기술정보통신부 국가과학기술연구회 창의형 융합연구사업의 지원을 받아 신개념 질병 유발 단백질 분해 치료기술 플랫폼 구축연구를 진행하여 프로탁 고유 기술을 확보하였다.

KRICT 온새미로 * 온새미로는 ‘있는 그대로, 자연 그대로’라는 뜻의 순우리말입니다.             오래 가고 쉽게 만들 수 있는 새로운 열전 소재 개발         화학소재연구본부   슬롯 다이 프린팅으로 열전소자를 제작하는 과정   화학연은 성능이 오래 지속되면서 가볍고 유연하며 인쇄 공정으로 저렴하게 제조할 수 있는 새로운 유기 열전소재를 개발했다. 열전 소재는 열을 가했을 때 전기가 발생하는 소재, 또는 역으로 전기를 주입했을 때 열을 발생시키거나 냉각시켜주는 소재를 말한다. 전기를 주입하면 열이 나거나 냉각되는 열전 소재는 자동차 시트쿨러, 와인 냉장고, 냉온 정수기 등에 상용화돼 쓰이고 있다. 그러나 열을 가했을 때 전기가 발생하는 소재는 아직 상용화에 여러 제약이 있어 전 세계적으로 이를 해결하기 위한 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있다.           　 열전 소재로는 크게 무기 소재, 유기 소재 등이 있는데 최근 고분자로 이루어진 유기 소재에 대한 연구가 새롭게 진행되고 있다. 유기 소재는 무기 소재에 비해 가볍고, 잘 휘어지며, 상온에서 비교적 쉽고 저렴하게 만들 수 있다는 장점이 있다. 유기 열전 소재 중 대표적인 것이 ‘폴리티오펜’이라는 고분자 소재다. 고분자 소재는 보통 전기가 잘흐르지 않는데, ‘폴리티오펜’이라는 특정 고분자 소재에 다른 물질을 도핑(불순물을 인위적으로 첨가해 전기적, 광학적, 열적 특성을 향상하는 과정)하면 열전 성능이 향상되어 최근 이를 활용한 연구가 전 세계적으로 진행되고 있다.     　 하지만 지금까지 폴리티오펜을 활용한 소재는 일주일만 지나도 열전 성능이 80% 이상 떨어지는 것으로 나타났다. 공기 중의 산소, 수분 등 때문이다. 화학연 조성윤 박사팀은 공기 중에 3주 이상 노출돼도 열전 성능을 유지하는 새로운 폴리티오펜 활용 소재를 개발했다. 공기 중에서 장시간 성능이 지속되는 폴리티오펜 열전 소자 제작은 처음이다. 　 연구팀은 ‘폴리티오펜’ 소재 위에, 소량의 염화금을 녹인 용액을 도포했다. 폴리티오펜 소재와 염화금이 만나면 화학반응이 일어나 염화금 이온과 금 나노입자가 생성되면서 독특한 고분자 결정 구조가 만들어진다. 이 결정 구조 속 염화금 이온은 열전 성능을 높여주고, 금 나노입자는 열전 성능이 오래 유지될 수 있게 도움을 준다. 연구팀은 가장 오래 성능이 지속될 수 있는 염화금 농도를 찾아, 극소량만 도포해도 성능이 지속될 수 있도록 했다. 　 본 소재는 신문을 인쇄하듯 찍어내는 프린팅 공정으로 상온에서 간단하고 저렴하게 제작할 수 있다는 장점이 있다. 면적이 넓은 칼날이 붓처럼 소재를 바르는 방식의 ‘슬롯 다이 프린팅’으로 폴리티오펜 소재를 찍어낸 후, 그 위에 염화금 용액을 도포하는 형태다.   　 이번 연구결과는 그 우수성을 인정받아 에너지 소재 분야 권위지인 『나노 에너지(Nano Energy), IF:16.602』 4월호에 게재되었다. 논문 제목은 ‘Highly efficient and air stable thermoelectric devices of poly(3-hexylthiophene) by dual doping of Au metal precursors’이다. 화학연 연구팀의 유기열전소재는 가볍고 유연하기 때문에 향후 웨어러블 기기, 스마트 센서, 사물인터넷 등에 적용할 수 있다. 또한 차량이나 선박에 적용하면 폐열을 전기로 생산할 수 있다. 글로벌 마켓 리서치 회사인 IDTechEx의 시장조사에 따르면 열전소자 전체 세계 시장규모는 2018년 2억 7,400만 달러에서 2022년에는 7억 4,600만 달러로 연평균 약 54% 성장할 것으로 보인다. 　 조성윤 박사는 “그동안 유기열전소재와 관련해 많은 연구가 이루어졌지만, 공기 중에서 성능이 안정적으로 지속되지 못했다는 한계가 있었다. 본 소재는 전기전도성도 좋고 성능이 오래 지속돼 향후 다른 전극 소재로도 적용이 확장될 수 있다. 연구팀은 열전 성능과 지속성을 더욱 높이는 연구를 계속 수행하고 있으며, 이를 통해 향후 웨어러블 기기나 센서의 자가전원으로도 응용될 수 있기를 바란다.”고 말했다. 본 연구성과는 한국연구재단 미래소재디스커버리 사업의 지원으로 수행됐다

KRICT <span font-size:="" helvetica="" malgun="" style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; -webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; border: 0px; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; font-size: inherit; line-height: 1.6; vertical-align: baseline; letter-spacing: -0.02em;" text-align:="" white-space:="">온새미로 * 온새미로는 ‘있는 그대로, 자연 그대로’라는 뜻의 순우리말입니다.             탄소중립 위한 친환경 산업가스 개발 연구협력 착수         화학공정연구본부     친환경 식각가스 개발 관련 업무협약식 사진(좌부터 유원양 TEMC 대표, 유병옥 포스코 산업가스 수소사업부장, 이미혜 한국화학연구원장, 유성 RIST 원장)   화학연은 6월 1일 오전 10시 연구원 중회의실에서 관련 기관과 함께 친환경 산업가스를 개발하기 위한 2건의 업무협약을 체결했다. 포스코, RIST(포항산업과학연구원)와 제철산업 부생가스로부터 화학원료 생산 기술 개발 업무협약을, 포스코, RIST, TEMC(티이엠씨) 등 4개 기관과는 반도체 제조 공정용 친환경 식각가스 및 냉매가스 기술 개발 업무협약을 체결했다. 본 행사에는 화학연 이미혜 원장, 화학공정연구본부 황영규 본부장, 화학소재연구본부 윤성철 본부장, 포스코 유병옥 산업가스·수소사업부장, RIST 유성 원장, TEMC 유원양 대표 등 4개 기관 관계자 16명이 참석했다. 첫 번째 업무 협약으로 한국화학연구원 화학공정연구본부는 포스코, RIST와 함께 제철산업 부생가스로부터 화학원료를 생산하는 기술 개발에 협력하기로 했다. 제철산업에서 부생으로 발생하는 가스는 일산화탄소, 메탄, 수소, 질소 등을 포함하고 있다. 부생가스는 주로 연료로 사용되는데 이때 온실가스인 이산화탄소가 발생한다. 부생가스를 메탄올, 합성가스 등 유용한 화학원료로 전환하면 이산화탄소 발생량을 획기적으로 줄이고 부가가치를 높일 수 있다. 따라서 화학연은 탄소중립 실현에 기여하기 위해 제철산업 부생가스로부터 일산화탄소를 분리·회수하여 화학원료를 제조할 계획이다. 향후 화학연 화학공정연구본부는 부생가스 활용기술을 개발하고, 포스코는 부생가스 원료 공급을, RIST는 분리기술 개발을 추진할 예정이다. 두 번째 업무 협약으로 화학연 화학소재연구본부는 포스코, RIST, TEMC와 함께 반도체·디스플레이를 제조할 때 쓰이는 식각가스 및 냉매가스를 친환경 가스로 제조하는 기술 개발에 협력하기로 했다. 반도체 산업에서 사용하는 식각가스(에칭가스)는 반도체 제조 중 회로의 불필요한 부분을 정교하게 깎아내는 기능을 하는 핵심가스다. 냉매가스는 일반 가정의 냉장고 및 에어컨뿐만 아니라 산업현장에서도 많이 사용되는 가스다. 그러나 현재 사용되고 있는 식각가스와 냉매가스는 지구온난화지수가 높아 친환경 가스 수요가 늘어나고 있다. 글로벌 시장조사 기관 ‘Markets and Markets’ 보고서에 따르면 2019년 약 9조 원 규모였던 저(低)온난화지수 식각가스 및 냉각가스 글로벌 시장은 2023년 약 15조 원 규모로 연평균 13%가량 성장할 것으로 전망되고 있다. 국내에서는 친환경 가스 수요 90% 이상을 미국, 일본 등 의 수입재에 의존하고 있어 국산화 또한 절실하다. 화학연 불소화학소재공정 국가연구실(N-LAB)은 향후 지구온난화지수가 낮은 친환경 식각가스 및 냉매가스 원천기술을 개발할 계획이다. 식각가스에는 여러 가스가 혼합되어 있는데, 사불화메탄(CF4) 등 불소 화합물이 주를 이루고 있다. 해당 연구실은 30년 이상 불소 화합물 연구역량을 축적한 국가연구실로서, 향후 새로운 친환경 불소계 식각가스 원천기술을 개발할 계획이다. 협약기관인 RIST는 향후 개발 기술의 규모확대(Scale-up) 연구를, 포스코와 TEMC는 가스 생산 및 상용화를 추진한다. 화학연 이미혜 원장은 “화학연은 화학분야 국내 유일 출연연구원으로서 국가 탄소중립 달성을 위한 다양한 기술 개발 연구를 수행하고 있다. 화학연의 연구역량과 포스코, RIST, TEMC와의 협력을 바탕으로 관련 기술 상용화를 촉진시키고 국가 온실가스 감축 기여를 앞당길 수 있기를 기대한다.”고 말했다.
